Hong Kong’s freedoms and capitalist way of life remain intact.
Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s
Republic of China on July 1, 1997. Hong Kong’s Basic Law –
a constitutional document – guarantees a high degree of autonomy
under the concepts of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ and
‘Hong Kong people running Hong Kong’. Under the provisions
of the Basic Law:

Hong Kong’s capitalist system and way of life shall
remain unchanged for 50 years |

Hong Kong enjoys a high degree of autonomy except in defence
and foreign affairs |

Hong Kong enjoys executive, legislative and independent judicial
power, including that of final adjudication |

The common law system is maintained |
| • |
Chinese and English are official languages |
| • |
The Hong Kong Dollar is the official currency and freely convertible |
| • |
Hong Kong remains a free port, a separate customs territory
and an international financial centre |
| • |
Hong Kong pursues the policy of free trade and safeguards
the free movement of goods, services and capital |

Hong Kong may on its own maintain and develop relations and
conclude and implement agreements with foreign states and regions
and relevant international organisations in appropriate fields
covering such area as the economy, trade, finance, shipping,
communications, tourism, culture and sport |
