Shooting Star Musical cum Reception

April 7, 2018

Shooting Star, a Hong Kong musical presented by Spring-Time Experimental Theatre, was staged in Singapore on April 7, 2018. The performance has toured around major cities in Mainland China and abroad, including Canada and Malaysia, since its debut overseas in 2007. Sponsored by the HKETO in Singapore this year, the musical showcased Hong Kong’s theatrical artists and soft power in performing arts to some 800 audiences, including about 250 guests invited by the HKETO. Modelling after the lives of Cantopop singers Leslie Cheung and Danny Chan as well as veteran DJ Paul Chung, Shooting Star told the story about how the trio had risen to fame and responded to different challenges in life. Over 40 songs of Leslie and Danny were integrated in the two-hour musical, which was presented by three new generation musical talents from Hong Kong. The audience enjoyed a delightful evening of nostalgic memories of the 1980s and 1990s. Taking the opportunity of the tour performance, producer of Shooting Star Clifton Ko held a fruitful sharing session with students, alumni and teachers from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts on his experience of theatrical production. At the pre-show reception, Director of the HKETO Bruno Luk hailed the musical for being a successful example of Hong Kong-Singapore collaboration in which theatrical talents from both places worked together on stage and behind the scene. He also expected more cultural programmes to be brought to this region with the Government’s enhanced support for Hong Kong arts groups to perform overseas.
