ASEAN Internship Scheme for Hong Kong Higher Education Students
With a view to widening Hong Kong higher education students' international perspectives and enhancing bilateral relations between Hong Kong and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices (HKETOs) in Singapore, Jakarta and Bangkok jointly administer the “ASEAN Internship Scheme for Hong Kong Higher Education Students” (the Scheme).
The Scheme has met with very positive responses and a total of some 800 Hong Kong higher education students have joined the Scheme so far in the previous six rounds. The organisations offering internship opportunities (Host Organisations) include government/public agencies, private companies, international organisations, academic institutions, think-tanks, arts and cultural organisations, etc. The Scheme now covers students of 11 participating Hong Kong higher education institutions (Hong Kong Institutions), i.e. the eight University Grants Committee-funded institutions, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Hong Kong Shue Yan University and The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong.
Aims
The scheme aims to:
- provide opportunities to higher education students of Hong Kong to take up internship in the ASEAN member countries;
- enable students to be exposed to the work of the relevant industries and operation of their respective Host Organisations, as well as the economic and socio-cultural environment of the host countries in the ASEAN; and
- cultivate students as the "ambassadors" of Hong Kong in the respective host countries in ASEAN and vice versa upon return to Hong Kong, thereby enhancing mutual understanding and strengthening ties between Hong Kong and the ASEAN member countries.
The HKETOs in Singapore, Jakarta and Bangkok now invite companies and organisations in the ASEAN region, as well as students of the 11 participating Hong Kong Institutions to join the Scheme.
Why should I join?
As a Host Organisation, you can bring in cross-cultural experience to your workplace, tap the creative minds of Hong Kong’s young generation, and build networks with some of the potential leaders of tomorrow.
As a student, you will have the opportunity to broaden your international perspectives on ASEAN, which is Hong Kong’s second largest trading partner if taken as a bloc, and is a fast-growing region with which Hong Kong enjoys long-established ties.
What are the requirements?
For a Host Organisation, the minimum requirement is the provision of internship opportunities with proper coaching and sufficient immersion in the industry environment. All other logistical matters will be taken care of by the Hong Kong Institutions and/or the student interns concerned.
For a student, you have to be a full-time student in one of the Hong Kong Institutions and meet other eligibility requirements specified by the institution, the Host Organisation, as well as the applicable visa/entry regulations of your intended country of internship placement.
